Your Next Flight Could Have United Wi-Fi℠
These days, when you look around the airplane on any given flight, you’re likely to notice that almost every single person is engaged with a smartphone, laptop or tablet. It’s usually right as you board that you realize you forgot to download the files you needed before leaving home, making your mobile device du jour about as useful as a paperweight. In order for you to be truly productive while traveling, you really need in-flight Wi-Fi!
Starting in about 2009, airlines began incorporating in-flight Wi-Fi, but as anyone who has experienced these services knows, it can be an extremely frustrating experience due to limited connectivity and slow download speeds.
New satellite-based Internet service called United Wi-Fi℠
We’re happy to hear that United Airlines has decided to take on the task of replacing their older “air to ground” technologies that rely on cell towers with new satellite-based systems. The new system offers more reliable connectivity and speeds that are 10 to 20 times faster than those currently on the market. United Airlines is now in the process of installing their new satellite-based Internet service called United Wi-Fi℠, which is currently available on over 800 aircrafts. United expects to finish the upgrades by October 2016.
To determine if your next flight offers the United Wi-Fi, you can check the Inflight Amenities tab on the flight status and information page at United.com. Please note that pricing will vary and on select flights you can use MilagePlus miles to purchase your internet.
