Sept. 21 is the International Day of Peace, a day for us to celebrate the human spirit and find ways to treat others with respect.
We celebrate the International Day of Peace each year on Sept. 21. This special occasion, declared by the United Nations, is meant to set aside 24 hours for “strengthening the ideals of peace” and committing to “non-violence and cease fire.”
Business Travelers are uniquely positioned to help celebrate the International Day of Peace — and to help create a sustainable and equitable world for mindful global travel. As professionals who see and experience different parts of the country and world, they constantly encounter new cultures and different ways of thinking and doing.
On this International Day of Peace, commit to encouraging your team to be a positive part of worldwide society. Here’s more on the International Day of Peace and how it relates to Travelers.
The International Day of Peace and the COVID-19 Pandemic
The United Nations first declared the International Day of Peace in 1981. Since then, it has served as a single-day reminder of what a peaceful world can be. Peace is even more important 40 years after the International Day of Peace’s founding, given just how challenging the last 18 months have been.
The world continues to suffer through the spread of COVID-19. With the pandemic top of mind, the United Nations is encouraging the world to “think creatively and collectively about how to help everyone recover better, how to build resilience, and how to transform our world into one that is more equal, more just, equitable, inclusive, sustainable, and healthier.”
2 Ways to Get Involved in the International Day of Peace
How can Executives get involved in the International Day of Peace? Here are 2 great opportunities:
- Celebrate the Human Spirit: At the Tokyo Olympics this summer, the world watched the best athletes in the world compete for medals. But the Olympics is more than that — it’s an opportunity to celebrate the human spirit. Executives can find ways big and small to encourage their team members to celebrate the human spirit on a regular basis.
- Practice Respectful Travel: We wrote earlier this year about the importance of respectful travel. Executives should always practice respectful travel when they are away from the office, and they are uniquely positioned to encourage their Travel Managers and Travelers to focus on the same thing — representing the company well by practicing respectful travel at all times.
There are surely other ways to get involved in the International Day of Peace month, but the 2 options above are good starting places for Executives.
