What do you like most about your job?
I enjoy building strong partnerships with my clients. I like to collaborate with clients on ways to enhance their travel programs. Keeping them well-informed of emerging trends and helping them succeed is incredibly important to me. The travel space is never dull; change and adaptability are crucial to my job.
What inspires you?
Watching my 15-year-old son grow into a respectful, mature young man. I have mixed feelings about this. I miss my baby boy. These days, I’m lucky if he hears a word I say. Technology has consumed him; it’s all about Snapchat, Instagram, and texting. He’ll text me when we’re in the same house! The plus side is that I have my very own tech support under my roof.
What does a usual day look like for you?
I live in email and spend time on Teams’ calls, both internal and external. I also spend time in our reporting tool, Prime Numbers, generating reports, gathering data for client reviews, etc. Working remotely is nothing new for most account managers. Face-to-face meetings are increasing, with topics centered around sustainability, NDC, blended travel, safety, and security.
What’s your life motto or slogan?
Change is never easy. Just prior to joining JTB Business Travel, I had been with my previous company for 10 years. I decided to take some time off and was seriously considering a career change. After a few months, I realized travel was in my DNA. I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of JTB. I really enjoy everything about this industry.
Why did you decide to start working in the travel industry?
I wanted to travel and see the world. When I started in the business, free airline tickets were plentiful and FAM trips (familiarization trips) were a regular occurrence. I’d jet to Europe for the weekend, arrive home Sunday night, and be at work bright and early Monday morning. And remote work wasn’t even a [term]. I’ve lived through so many changes in this business — it seems like a lifetime ago — but I wouldn’t trade those years and the memories for anything.
What question do business Travelers ask you most often when planning travel for work?
Since I work with account management, questions are usually centered around corporate benefits. Do we have access to their company-preferred partners? Are those discounts visible to the Travelers? How can we save them money? What are the latest travel trends?
What is the most valuable thing you have learned from working with business Travelers?
Listening to the Traveler is job No. 1. Being part of a Travel Management Company, we need to be innovative and look for ways to streamline travel. Whether clients are booking via the company-chosen booking tool, or with one of our travel advisors, we have to simplify the Traveler’s experience.
Is there anything you do in your personal life that has benefited you in your work life?
Working remote and maintaining a good work-life balance has been a part of my world for 20-plus years. It can be challenging to separate the personal from the business. You must be disciplined and set boundaries. I make sure to carve out time for family and friends — and me! Never be afraid to say “no.”
What do you enjoy most about working with people who travel for work?
I work with a lot of Travel Managers, and they usually have multiple roles. I like to be as supportive and accessible as possible because I know they’re juggling duties. I try and serve as an advocate for my clients and help them achieve their goals. Communication is key. Keeping Travel Managers informed is crucial.
Do you speak Japanese?
No, I do not, but I’m in awe of those that do.
Have you ever been to Japan?
No, it’s on the bucket list.
What is your favorite travel destination?
Aix-en-Provence, in the south of France. I could sit outside all day and watch the world go by. The stunning architecture, the food, the people…
Where is your favorite place to eat, drink or enjoy, when you travel?
At Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, you must try the Northside Pretzel. It’s a giant soft pretzel with three dipping sauces: mustard, cheese, and cinnamon cream cheese. It’s the best wayto spend a warm afternoon.
